Several people were injured when the police lathicharged the crowd gathered at a function to mark the 63rd birthday celebration of Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh at his hometown Latur, Sahara Samay sources said.

The crowd at the Town Hall ground was anxiously waiting for actress Priyanka Chopra, the chief guest at a cricket tournament, but the former Miss World turned up at 4 pm instead of 1 pm.

As they pushed forward to get a glimpse of the star, the police pushed them back.

The irritated crowd retaliated by hurling slippers at the dais, following which the cops caned the mob.

Police claimed that it was a “mild lathi-charge” which was triggered because of some miscreants hurling chappals and stones towards the dais.

It is learnt that seven policemen, including the deputy superintendent of police, Tushar Doshi, suffered minor injuries in the clash.

Chopra was invited by the chief minister’s son, Amit Deshmukh, to hand over the prizes of the cricket tournament organised on the occasion of Deshmukh’s birthday on Saturday.
