On his recent Mumbai visit…

I came back to New York feeling greatly inspired from my recent travels to India, especially Mumbai, where the buzz and energy are similar to that of New York. I was reminded of the Indian sense of individualism in the bold style of dress, the rich colours, the rich aromas, flavours of the cuisines and the local art.

On Indian celebs he’d love to dress…

I had a great time dressing Malaika Arora-Khan – she is a beautiful and elegant woman who wore everything so well. I would love to dress her again. As well as Priyanka Chopra, Kareena Kapoor and John Abraham who are three other very talented personalities.

On his most defining moment…

One of my most defining moments was in 1985 when I first saw my name on the billboard in Times Square along side Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein and Perry Ellis. I was the “next great unknown” designer, and it created an incredible buzz around my brand.

On one person he was thrilled to design for…

I really enjoyed working with Beyonce – everything I designed for her was worn with such stylish grace and timeless elegance. Not only is she extremely talented and beautiful, but she is sophisticated, intelligent and charming.

On another talent he’d love to have…

I would love to be a rockstar – I would love to experience the rush of performing on stage for thousands of people!

On his muse…

Music has always been an inspiration to me, both in my personal life and in my career as a fashion designer. My rockstar muses have been the ones with very distinct and influential looks, Mick Jagger had his unique sense of style; Brian Jones was wearing smocks and frocks; Charlie Watts was always crisply tailored. Those guys changed the way that people thought about fashion.
